the NHDI blog National History Day in Indiana is a highly acclaimed, year-long education effort that uses history to challenge students in grades four through 12 to improve their research, analytical and communication skills. History comes alive as students - working in groups or individually - actively explore a specific topic that interests them based on the National History Day theme. NHDI projects encourage students to express themselves creatively through dramatic performances, documentaries, Web sites, exhibits and papers for competitions at the local, district and state levels. Students compete in four contest divisions based on their grade level. Student research is based on primary and secondary sources from libraries, archives, museums and historical societies. As part of their study, National History Day students have opportunities to meet experts in the fields of history, science, technology and the arts. The NHDI staff supports Indiana educators and students around the state with suggestions for topics, research strategies and project consultations to prepare for the contests. The NHDI staff provides tips for getting started, contest information, helpful Web links for student research and contest forms. For more information, call (317) 234-0085 or e-mail us. National History Day in Indiana is sponsored by Brightpoint Inc.

On Nov. 21, 2009, the IHS will host a National History Day in Indiana Teacher Workshop at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis. In this workshop teachers will learn about the educational value of using NHDI in the classroom, listen to and participate in a panel discussion among veteran teachers, hear from participating students who will present previous projects and create their own sample exhibits to take home. This workshop is designed for teachers new to the NHD program, but all teachers and media specialists are welcome to attend. Three Credit Renewal Units (CRUs) will be awarded upon completion of the workshop. Cost: $10 for members; $15 for non members. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided.
